What to Expect When You Walk In
Grosvenor Casino Thanet is the site that serves Margate, Broadstairs and much of the Kent coast. You will find us at Unit 47, Westwood Cross Retail Park, Margate Road, Broadstairs, CT10 2BF. There is free parking throughout the retail park, which keeps the drive from Margate town centre fairly straightforward. The postcode can throw people off a little, because it technically places the venue in Broadstairs rather than Margate, but in practice this is the same local area.
On the gaming floor, blackjack sits alongside American Roulette and Poker as one of our main table games. We also run electronic gaming machines if you prefer something more hands-off or just want a break from live tables. Away from the felt, there is an a la carte restaurant and a late-opening bar, so a visit here often turns into more than a quick session.
Opening hours are long and predictable. Live gaming runs from midday to 4 AM Sunday to Thursday, and midday to 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. If anything is unclear before you travel in, you can speak to the team directly on 01843 579999.
| Day | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday - Thursday | 12:00 noon | 04:00 AM |
| Friday | 12:00 noon | 04:00 AM |
| Saturday | 12:00 noon | 04:00 AM |
For players who like to settle in for an evening session, those late closing times are genuinely helpful. A lot of regular visitors plan around them.
How the Game Actually Works at Our Tables
The basic aim in blackjack is straightforward. You play to finish with a hand closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. If your total is higher and still valid, you win that hand. Almost everything else at the table is built on this one idea.
Card values follow the standard Grosvenor rules that you will see across our other venues in the UK. Number cards from 2 to 10 are worth their face value. Jack, Queen and King are each counted as 10. The Ace is flexible, working as either 1 or 11 depending on which value keeps your hand in play.
Each round starts with the dealer giving two cards to every player and two cards to themselves. One of the dealer’s cards is face up, which lets you factor it into your decision-making. You then have a choice. You can stick - stand on your total as it is - or twist and take another card. You may twist for additional cards before the hand is resolved, subject to the table rules in play. If your total runs over 21 at any point, your hand busts on the spot. In that case, the dealer’s total no longer matters and your stake for that hand is lost.
Paying attention to the dealer’s shown card is where most of the judgement comes in. The game is not complicated, but that one card can change what a sensible move looks like from hand to hand.
You are always welcome to ask staff for help or clarification about the table rules or facilities at any point during your visit.
Win Conditions and What Gets Paid
At our Grosvenor Casino Margate blackjack tables, you can win in three main ways. You finish the hand with a total that beats the dealer, with neither of you busting. The dealer goes over 21 while your total stays valid. Or you draw a natural 21 in your first two cards and the dealer does not match it.
A natural 21, or blackjack, is the strongest possible result in the game. When this happens and the dealer does not also make 21 with their first two cards, the hand is settled immediately in your favour. If both you and the dealer hit 21 from the opening deal, the outcome is a push. That means no money changes hands and your original bet is simply returned. Standard winning hands are paid out according to the table rules in play.
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Player total higher than dealer, neither bust | Player wins |
| Dealer busts, player hand valid | Player wins |
| Player draws 21 on first two cards, dealer does not | Blackjack win |
| Both player and dealer draw 21 on first two cards | Push |
| Player total exceeds 21 | Player loses immediately |
It is worth having these outcomes clear in your mind before sitting down, rather than trying to work them out in the middle of a live hand.
Playing Your First Hand - How It Goes
If you have not played at one of our blackjack tables before, the way each round runs is very consistent. Once you have seen it a couple of times, it becomes second nature. In simple terms, this is what happens:
- Choose a free seat at a blackjack table and swap your cash for chips, either with the dealer or at the main cashier desk.
- Place your chips in the betting circle in front of your seat before the dealer starts dealing.
- The dealer gives two cards face up to every active player and two to themselves, one face up and one face down.
- Check your total, then look at the dealer’s visible card so you understand the situation.
- Decide whether to stick on your current total or twist and ask for another card, and make your signal clear so the dealer can act correctly.
- If you twist, the dealer gives you one extra card at a time. You may continue to twist subject to the table rules in play.
- When all players have finished acting on their hands, the dealer turns over their face-down card and continues according to table rules.
- The dealer then compares each player’s hand to their own and pays out any winning bets in chips.
You are free to step away between rounds whenever it suits you. Just pick up your chips, head over to the cashier to exchange them back into cash, and that is the session finished. There is no requirement to stay longer than you want to.
